"The Fragile Balance of the Acrobat," a series produced as part of the Grande Commande Photographique. I had the chance to follow the high-octane adventures of the CirkVOST company for more than six months, a renowned contemporary circus, a close-knit collective of around thirty acrobatic artists and their collaborators, a group with eclectic and colorful personalities. Taking a look at the world of live performance, the circus, is for me a political choice, particularly in the current context marked by years of health crisis. I wanted to capture the hard work put into putting on a show. From transporting equipment, to setting up structures, including rehearsals and warm-up sessions, everything here is a matter of physical performance and skillful organization. Each artist participates without exception in the different stages of the process with contagious good humor. This sharing of work is admirable and allows them a modesty that matches their talent.

I remain fascinated by these artists whom some consider "non-essential." These artists who have made a difficult, precarious life choice, whose economy is constantly suspended at the breaking point. These artists who take risks and wear out ligaments and tendons in the anguish of injury. These artists devoured by the poetry of creation that they share every night under the spotlight. One only has to look at the stars that bloom in the eyes of the audience at the end of a show to understand how vital their art is.

Meyer with CirkVOST

Meyer   cultivates the conviction that the photographic act is not made to observe the world, but to construct it.

Favoring experience over style, he tests his vision on a broad spectrum that embraces both documentary and digital photomontage creations. From Palestine (special jury prize Paris Match), to traveling cinema in Africa (World Press Photo), by way of the anti-globalization movements, Nuit Debout or bullfighting, in his work the subject imposes itself.

In 2012 he published Dans le cinéma l'enfant spectateur in collaboration with the Alhambra in Marseille, a series on the impact of cinema on a young audience.

In 2015, invited to a residency in Deauville as part of the Planche(s) contacts festival, he created Polosuperpose, a series of photomontages on the world of polo, an equestrian sport where chic and fracas go hand in hand.

In 2019 he published Lunacy with Loco, a book on the golden age of the underground rave party movement in France.

As part of a residency offered by the city of Saint-Ouen in 2020, he participated in the book Joue-la where he multiplied photographic practices to paint a portrait of a city that vibrates under the intensity of football.

In 2022, he was awarded the Grand Commission for Photojournalism by the Ministry of Culture. Meyer has been a member of the Tendance Floue collective since 1996.
